Utility group critique
IT WAS
a pleasure to judge the Utility group at the prestigious Birmingham
Championship Show. An excellent, large, well carpeted and well lit
ring, the quality of the exhibits was first rate and I thank the
breed judges for sending forward such a quality selection. From the
21 present I pulled in eight for further inspection:
3rd, Ch Hashanah Flash Point, Shih Tzu, as always in
superb condition and in immaculate coat, superb stacked, short
coupled and excellent reach, moved with complete freedom, another I
have had the pleasure of awarding a CC;
A most enjoyable and
challenging appointment, thanks to exhibitors and Birmingham
officers.

Class 1860 VD (2 Entries) Abs: 1
1st: MURRELL Krisquest Clean Sweep a very smart gold and white in pristine coat
and condition. Eyes a shade full now otherwise difficult to assess
his age. Smart as paint, level backline delightful head shape and
moves with a certain jauntiness.
Class 1861 MPD (10 Entries) Abs: 1
1st: STANGELAND Weatsom Lets Get Serious a top quality young man
with heaps of promise. Stylish on the move he is a delight to go
over. Excellent head, good width between the eyes which are dark and
quite round, his nose that fraction tip tilted aiding his expression
of aloofness. Nicely ribbed he is chunky in body, heavy boned,
profusely coated and clearly shows his pads when going away.
2nd: QUICK Minfaa Space Cowboy really nice constructed with a lovely ribcage,
backline and tail set. Has a decent arch to his neck that carries a
nice head. Perhaps not the skull development of the first as yet but
quite masculine and with pleasing eyes. In excellent jacket he is
totally balanced when circling the ring.
3rd: LORD Huxlor Blazing All Guns

Class 1862 PD (7 Entries) Abs: 0
1st: ACE Bar of Gold with Matsonic a sound moving grey/white dog with
a degree of charm in his outlook. Nice length/height proportions,
level backline with a very good tailset and nice bend of stifle. His
head is a good shape, excellent mouth and the muzzle short and well
finished. Just edged out for BPD on the winner having, for me, a
slightly better eye size.
2nd:WILLETT Debeaux Washington this black & white is perhaps not a glamour boy
but he is a delight to handle. Excellent head for skull breadth, the
nose almost in a line with the lower eye rim and he has a chin. Very
heavy bone, well ribbed and in excellent coat. Needs to firm up in
front action.
3rd: SYMONDS Symaraju Lord of the Dance
Res:SCANNELL Jacquinta If By Chance
VHC: JONES Cedarhythe By Pure Chance to Fairlou
Class 1863 JD (5 Entries) Abs: 2
1st: DAVIES Navross Spirit in the Sky apart from being a shade full in eye for
my taste, this is a delightful young man. Well constructed he is
heavy in bone, the ribcage carries well back and he is so rounded
and muscular in hindquarters. Very nice head for size and in
spotless condition. Moved alright once he settled down.
2nd:BEER Harropine Gunther I admired his head, the skull a good size and
breadth, the stop well defined, the nose large and well-shaped eyes.
I would like a little more reach of neck and I feel he could be
shorter coupled to give the proportions I seek.
3rd: BOLT Kucheng Perfect Timing
Class 1864 ND (7 Entries) Abs: 1
1st: DEVINE & MALONE Mirazian Artist Impression other than being a trifle
long cast, I liked him a lot. He has a really nice head for size and
shape, plus points in eyes, large, dark, expressive and no white
showing! Good neck, level back and a really good tail set and
carriage. Demands a second look on the move.
2nd: FLACK & HANNAH Mifcahs Fast and Furious not a hair out of place on the
grey & white. Not the rib development of the winner so less chunky.
However, his topline is level, he has a decent head, the nose
placement excellent and he is so well boned. Another which takes the
eye in action.

Class 1865 GD (8 Entries) Abs: 1
1st: BILLSON Sarsuki Principle Boy at Shanjora I felt this black and white had
the best head In this class. It is a fair size, so well shaped and
the correct eye size, shape and colour enhance the expression so
much. Nicely ribbed, excellent tail set and carriage and in good
coat. When stacked he is handsome.
2nd: CULVERHOUSE Lykath's Legolas JW black and white with one of the best mouths
of the day. Pleasing head, not quite the stunning eye and expression
of the first but his skull is nicely rounded, his nose is ideally
placed and he was in excellent coat. He does have a nicely rounded
rump and his heavily boned hind legs are covered with good muscle.
3rd: ASHMAN Wonder of You

Class 1866 PGD (8 Entries) Abs: 1
1st: McINTYRE Bakalo Shayna Punim at Shanitau a well boned, bodied
and coated dog with that hint of quality which always means a second
look. For me a tad overdone in neck length, other than that I felt
he has style. Excellent head properties, super eyes and expression
and so extrovert on the move.
2nd: GRUGAN Grandavon Extra Special With Jardhu gold & white that is strongly made throughout.
Heavily boned excellent forechest and spring of rib. Good breadth in
skull which is well rounded and lovely coat texture. Close run thing
but I preferred the winner in expression.
3rd: WILLETT Debeaux Ruff Love
Res: RUTTER Ethelsmead Dirty Harry

Class 1867 LD (14 Entries) Abs: 3
1st:BUSHELL Caserose Mr Toby Jug a real delight this handsomely
headed dog. Undeniably male in outlook enhanced by those lovely
eyes. Beautiful outline aided by a sufficient arch of neck, level
back over a big ribcage, leading to a really well muscled and
rounded rump and that high set, perfectly carried tail. His
presentation was immaculate and he did everything right on the move.
I considered him seriously in the challenge and feel he should get
his title.
2nd: BURNS Jenkapa Some Like It Hot smaller all through but nonetheless
quite masculine. I loved his head shape, the mouth and muzzle finish
and his head carriage. Nicely ribbed, enough forechest and weight of
bone and like the winner he can motor. Not quite the eye of the
first which swung the scales.

What a class! Filled with lots of top quality dogs and some I have
admired before were edged out on the merest of details today.
1st: HOWARD Ch Tameron Mr XS my BPIB last time I judged & I have watched his
spectacular rise to fame ever since. Today he was again presented in
superb bloom, handled to perfection and he never put a foot wrong.
Appeals whether in stance or on the move and whilst there are
specific differences between him and the second dog it was his
fuller jacket which today swung the scales his way.
2nd: FRANKS Ch Hashanah Hot Shot this red and white is absolutely typical of the
long run of outstanding dogs and bitches this prefix has produced
for a number of years. For sheer breed type and especially head and
expression they are hard to beat. This heavily boned dog is yet
another outstanding Shih Tzu and I was delighted to give him the Res.CC.

1st: JOHNSON Paliden Make a Wish at Keytor What a poppet. G/w with the loveliest
of heads which is developing beautifully. I just fell for her
expression and the proportions of her head. So firmly ribbed, in
good body and that gorgeous tail set and carriage. Still a little
uncollected in front action but that will settle. But she has style.
2nd: ROSSER Stenross Calendar Girl a real glamour puss this black and white. Her
outline when stacked stops one dead then she gives you that look!
She has lots of promise, motors round with the confidence of an old
hand, was in immaculate coat and deserved her place in this lovely
class.

Class 1871 PB (13 Entries) Abs: 2
1st:GILKES Zeeva Fire and Ice Quite an eyeful. Gloriously rich red
and white jacket. Large headpiece, beautiful mouth, nose placement
spot on and another with that "you know you like me" gaze. The
chunkiest of bodies, heavy in bone, level backline, excellent tail
set and carriage and what a show off when moving. I see she is all Hashannah breeding, sired by the RCC
Dog out of the lovely Ch. bitch which was 3rd in OB. One I shall
follow with interest.
2nd: FLACK & HANNAH, Mifcahs Move Over Dad JW Sh.CM In most normal puppy
classes would be a comfortable winner as she has so much going for
her. Her headpiece is a joy and the expression so appealing from
those darkest of so alive eyes. Good neck, trifle longer in body
than the first but she has excellent hams, good weight of bone and
is quite accomplished on the move.

Class 1872 JB (14 Entries) Abs: 4
1st: BUSHELL Superlion Redoute Rose at Caserose ultra feminine
package which quite captivated me on sight. The head & eyes are
superb and no matter when I glanced towards her she was looking at
me. I even walked down the ring and the neck was imperceptible in
movement, but there she was watching – so aloof & defiant. Not the
heaviest in bone, but adequate and rest of the package just fits so
beautifully. Her proportions are very much me, her presentation
impossible to better and that tail set just completes the picture.
Sound as a pound and with a presence we all wish for. In a lovely
line up of bitches I was more than happy to give her the runner up
spot to the BOB winner and wish her well.
2nd:MAULE Virtulvilage Carousel self-red with lots to like. Good
size, well boned and of good overall proportions. Pleasing headpiece
but where the winner oozed self belief, this one was less forward.
Moves well and will look better when she projects herself more.

2nd: SWEENEY Marionswood Cameo g/w with a good head, correctly balanced and with
a well-placed nose. I admired her eyes, not overdone and no white
showing. Enough neck, topline a little unsettled when moving but it
is quite level and firm when table handled. Again a credit in coat
condition and pleased me on the move.

Class 1874 GB (6 Entries) Abs: 0
1st: BROWN Rossvale She's Bewitching a well established prefix which invariably
produces top quality stock and this is another. Gold and white with
a scrumptious head, so well developed skull, excellent eyes of the
darkest hue, nose placement all you could want and carried atop a
nicely arched neck. She is proportionately balanced, was spotless in
condition and moved well. Another very bright prospect.
2nd: EDMONDS Cedarhythe Tabasco Jazz white and red not quite so finished looking
in coat and furnishings as the first. Very good head, especially in
skull. Loved her expression, the firmest of level backs and the tail
correctly set and carried. She moves with much drive, the pads
pushing back so visibly.
3rd: JONES Shanjo Heart Breaker for Fairlou
Res: MONK Paliden Rhapsody In Red For Morhenjo

Class 1875 PGB (9 Entries) Abs: 2
1st:DOLPHIN Dolha's Deja Vue a real chunky bodied and heavily boned bitch with
lovely feet, excellent ribcage and powerful hindquarters. Her head
is a good shape, well placed nose and dark pigmentation. Covers the
ground with such an even stride. Just wish her tail was carried a
little higher.
2nd: TOD Chanikos Truly Charming of Kengai at first glance I felt
could be the winner. She has that appeal which is an asset and was a
delight to go over. Very good head, lovely eyes which convey self
importance. Her neck is used to advantage, her back firm and level
and her tail better set and carried than the winner. Regrettably she
was somewhat lethargic on the move, not showing the true up and at
‘em gait I associate with the breed. Perhaps it was the floor.
3rd: BURNS Jenkapa Too Hot To Touch
Res: WILLIAMS Essvana Picabo Street
VHC: TOWNSIN Redhall Jus F' the Thrill of It
Class 1876 LB (18 Entries) Abs: 2
1st:FRANKS Hashanah Red or Ded red and white of immediate impact appeal. Thought
I had "found" a new star, only to learn after judging that she was
another Hashannah being handled by a friend.
Also that she is already a Group winner. I loved everything about
her. She is feminine, heavily boned, beautiful feet, powerful
hindquarters and a head so typical of her breeding. She is arrogant
in expression with that "what’s gonna be second" gaze. Just a trifle
short of furnishings which cost her the RCC. Her day will come.
2nd:LORD Vanitonia Bundle of Laughs at Huxlor Another heading for the top. Quite
enchanting headpiece with eyes to die for set so well in a lovely
headpiece. Holds herself so well, showing off her lovely bodyshape and outline. She is so balanced, well ribbed, has a decent
forechest and was in full bloom. Whilst she is totally sound she
didn’t quite have the rear drive of Red.
3rd: FARNWORTH Tsantha Lucky in Love
Res:CARTER & LEIGH Sonoltay Talk About Mollie of

VHC: DAVIES Navross Silver Dawn
Class 1877 OB (8 Entries) Abs: 2 Another lovely class of outstanding
bitches.
1st:FRANKS Ch Hashanah Flash Point Red and white with that drop dead gorgeous
headpiece which stopped me in my tracks. Not a big bitch but such
heavy bone, excellent spring of ribs, the hardest of backlines and
that fantastic tail set and carriage. Positively explosive on the
move and seemingly filled with self belief. In stance she
exemplifies the breed for sheer arrogance in both her expression and
deportment. She certainly is a true star.
2nd: ANDERTON Ch Pekoe Pick Me Up JW dark grey and white whose coat
presentation and condition was outstanding. She too oozes charm with
a gorgeous head and expression, lovely firm, well ribbed body, a
good tail and she too can shift around the ring, holding her shape
and driving well. Backline not as level as I would like when table
handled yet once moving, the shape is exactly as one would like. Had
to be good to beat the 3rd another beautiful bitch
