WELKS
2003
judge Pat Maule
The Kennel club has asked for suggestions on how to make shows more exibitor friendly – denying baby puppies the chance to compete in their own age group does not make for happy exhibitors or happy judges. The two puppy classes were not the pleasure to judge that they should have been, with so many raw six month olds totally overawed at their first outing competing against experienced "grown up" puppies. This entry, I feel, proves that the breed deserves minor puppy classes. Mouths were very acceptable, but small, and or light eyes do not appear to have improved. Large dark eyes are such an essential part of the Shih Tzu’s make up, giving that ‘I’m alive and looking for mischief’ look.
Temperaments gave me a great deal of concern. What has happened to the ‘friendly and independent’ requirement of the Breed Standard? Instead of classes full of self possessed, confident, arrogant, outgoing exhibits far too many really didn’t want to be at the show. Stiff tense bodies under my hands, wary expressions and lacking enthusiasm on the move. One adult bitch snapped at my hand. All dogs whether show or companions live with people and should have friendly, reliable temperaments. Presentation and coat do not compensate for faulty construction or ‘tippy toe’ movement but with just two minutes per exhibitor allowed for assessment time spent channelling the breeds natural ‘show off’ attitude to make themselves stand out in a crowd is an obvious advantage particularly in the higher classes where several dogs are competing for top honours. I fail to understand why so many dogs are not groomed underneath, clumps of matted coat are neither pleasant to feel or comfortable for the dog. Pleased to see youngsters being given the opportunity to handle exhibits with potential giving them, I hope, encouragement to stay in the breed.

1 Culverhouses Lykath’s Legolas. 11 and a half months Black/White.
Needs to be handled to be fully appreciated, at first glance appears
unbalanced but is actually very well put together. Super head
qualities, very dark eyes, excellent dentition comes together on the
move, full of energy, covers the ground with ease. A different style
of presentation would, I feel, enhance his qualities.
2 Stobb’s
Sonomas Show Must Go On. 8 months Gold/White Very smart immediately
catches the eye with his beautifully presented coat of good quality
texture and his eyes with the desired warm, gentle expression draw
you to him, handled to advantage making the most of his plus points.

1 Young and Paradise’s Sonoltay Tuff Stuff. JW. 17 months
Black/White Smaller type who stood away in his class. Adult coat
coming through nicely and he now looks very grown up. Excels in
balance, very arrogant expressive head which is proudly held. Moved
with the best front extension and really drove of his hocks. Handled
to look his best at all times.
2 Grugan’s Grandavon Extra Special
with Jardhu. 15 Month old Gold/White. More my personal preference
for size and head type. Looked to be my winner standing, loveliest
of heads, strongly boned, balanced outline. Did not enjoy showing
inside and just would not give of his best on the move.

1 Burn’s Jenkapa Some Like It Hot. G/B/W Medium size. Proudly
held head of good type. Kept a level topline, scores in outline
particularly when moving in profile, would like a stronger rear
action. Adult coat coming through just needs a little more for the
finished picture.
2 Farnsworth’s Tsantha Moulin Rouge. Gold/White
Larger type, scores in head properties and overall balance. Another
not enjoying the indoor conditions and did not give of his best.

Garry’s Rygar Galileo.

1 Williams’ Samp[a Pemba Loo-Ming at Tickletums. Solid Gold.
Showed the rest of his class how a Shih Tzu should really move. He
really was on a mission with somewhere to go! Excellent head with
wide jaw, that extra special look that the solids tend to have, so
full of alertness and mischief. Harsh textured coat a bit unruly so
tends to detract from his qualities very abley handled by a young
lady.
2 McIntyre’s Bakalo Shayna Punim at Shanitau. Gold/White. So
much to like about this lad, lots of plus points. Presents a
balanced outline, lovely head, well set tail, put down in superb
condition. Would like to see a little more effort when moving .

1 and Res CC Forbe’s Harropine Trail Blazer to Ekland. Brindle/White
My best dog puppy the last time I judged . He has now matured into a
quality male. Shown in full coat superbly presented. Moves so well
with good front extension and strong rear action. Arrogant, proudly
held head, balanced outline. Good width between the eyes , wide
muzzle.
2 Carter and Leigh’s Gladminhottentot Hoo-Ha. Gold/White
Happy chap in good coat. Quality head, well sprung ribs. Presents a
good overall balanced picture.

1 and CC Grugan’s Jardhu Tobii-Tobias. Gold/White. Quality all male
with a beautiful head and the most gorgeous eyes. Head carriage and
tail complement each other. At 4 years looking in the peak of
condition with firm toned muscles, level top line, profuse coat
excellently presented. A pleasure to judge. Moved well here and in
the challenge but later had to give way to a beautiful bitch in full
sail!
2 Goodwin’s Chelhama Aquarius . Gold /White. Another quality 4
year old male with well toned body, lovely coat, well put down.
Preferred expression of the first.
3 Medlow’s Inishfendra Gonna Be
Wild.

1 Res CC Russell and Evan’s Matsuba Scandalizer. Gold/White 9 months
Exquisite, all feminine, alert to my every move. So well balanced
just flowed round the ring. Has that extra indefinable quality that
takes your breath away. Very young for top honours but I judge on
the day and, for me, she had so many plus points and a freshness and
confidence that belied her age.
2 Bushell’s Superlion Redoute at
Caserose. Red/Gold/Brindle 10 Months. Lovely head, very pretty.
Balanced outline excellent tail, moved with style, showed herself to
advantage.

1 Brown’s Rossvale She’s Bewitching. Gold/White . Sturdy, well boned,
not wearing her best clothes but coat at this stage of development
is a bonus not a ‘must have’. Very pretty with expressive eyes.
Covered the ground with ease keeping a balanced outline at all
times.
2 Gregory’s Marpalyn Chanelle. Gold/White . Smaller type,
presents a very appealing picture, ultra feminine in full coat of
quality texture. Would like to see a little more animation on the
move.

1 Goodwin’s Kucheng Klassic Capers at Cabbala. Grey/White. In
full coat, beautifully put down in gleaming condition. Personifies
arrogance with her proudly held head demanding attention. A pleasure
to watch as she flows around the ring, her correctly constructed
body giving the desired forward reach and rear drive. A strong
contender for top honours.
2 Dolphin’s Dolpha’s Deja Vue.
Gold/White. Soundly put together, well boned, sturdy, moved with
enthusiasm. Expressive head. In between coat but what she has is of
a harsh texture.

1 Farnworth’s Tsanta Lucky in Love. Black/White. Difficult
bitch to appreciate from across the ring, her solid black head needs
to be studied up close for full impact. Large, really dark, eyes
draw you in and makes her impossible to ignore. Looked lovely with
her neck nicely arched complementing her tail carriage. In the ‘nit
picking’ challenge just lost out a little on the move.
2 Garry’s Welitz Another Party at Rygar. Gold/White. Different type to 1 being
higher on the leg. Head broad and round wide between the eyes.
Intelligent expression, nice outline. Moves with drive.

1st, CC and BOB Forbes Debeaux Last Laugh Ekland. Pale Gold/White.
My ultimate star of the day. Exquisite pretty bitch at the top of
her form. Arrogant and alert yet soft and feminine. My eye was drawn
to her each time I glanced round the ring. Her perfect balance of
head and tail carriage, level top line and ultra femininity tipped
the balance in her favour when it came to the bitch challenge. A
delight to watch as she flowed round the ring at just the right
speed. Expertly handled to make the most of herself.
2 Merrett’s
Venustus Bette Davis Eyes. Brindle/White . So much to like, well
balanced, put down in good coat. Looked particularly good on the
move as her construction allows freedom of movement. Preferred
expression of first.
