Paignton 2003

Utility group critique

I was most appreciative of Paignton Ch. Show Committee for inviting me to judge the Utility Group. I short listed the Dalmatian, Japanese Shiba Inu, Keeshond, Min Schnauzer, Std.Poodle, Min Poodle, Shar Pei, Shih Tzu, and Tibetan Terrier for further consideration. I pulled out the Keeshond, Std. Poodle, Shih Tzu, and the Tibetan Terrier for the placings.
G4 The Shih Tzu Frank’s Ch. Hashana’s Flash Point. Everything correct on examination, a true head and expression, solid, true movement, would have liked a little more furnishing for a higher placing.

I was extremely pleased with all my prize winners and in both challenges the exhibits went away showing evenly spaced legs and full pads. I encountered two problems which I penalised heavily. Front construction I found really worrying, in some cases it was difficult to fit three fingers between the legs, reminding me of the Victorian pictures of Queen Anne fronted Dashchunds with many coming towards me centring to the middle and one bitch actually crossing her front legs. The other fault I found creeping in was lack of bone and substance.
