Utility group critique
IT WAS
a pleasure to judge the Utility group and I thank the Officers and
Committee for the hospitality extended to my wife and
myself.
The only absentees were the Toy Poodle and the
Schipperke. From the 20 dogs present I shortlisted the Akita
Nosferatu Nemesis for Sukari JW, the Dalmatian Ch Gemmont Marauding
Mutineer at Macula JW, the Keeshond Neradmik Idle Gossip, Lhasa Apso
Zentarr Madonna, Standard Poodle Ch Huffish Another Point of View
for Atastar, the Shih Tzu Ch Hashanna Flashpoint and the Tibetan
Terrier Waterley Dressed To Impress.
They all gave a good
account of themselves and were excellent representatives of their
breeds, but after further deliberation I had to give Group 1 to the
beautiful Shih Tzu. Not the first time I have judged this
experienced campaigner. On the day she was on top form and couldn’t
be denied her place. Second was the impressive Keeshond which caught
my eye as he entered the ring, so very sound, beautifully presented
in full bloom. Third was the Standard Poodle, another which I have
previously awarded Group 1. Looking mature and splendid in his new
suit, couldn’t be overlooked. Fourth was the upstanding white
poodle, most impressive free standing and on the move.

In general I found the breed to be strong and sound, well presented and with excellent temperament. All my winners were well balanced with excellent heads, shoulders and correct bone. On the minus side teeth are still a problem as is the lack of front extension when moving. Some dogs need also to develop in stifle and second thigh to stabilise hind movement. All in all the bitches surpassed the dogs in quality and movement.
