Manchu Shih Tzu Society Championship
Show
Sunday 17th April 2005.
Judges: Dogs Grant Carter, Bitches, Pauline Brooks
DOGS Firstly may I say how sorry I was to learn of the disposition of the appointed judge - Mr Jack Mitchell. I am sure we all wish him a speedy recovery. Under these circumstances I must thank the exhibitors for accepting me as a substitute judge & for the sporting manner in which they accepted my placements. Thank you also to Val Goodwin & the committee of Manchu for making me so welcome & my day so pleasurable. It was so gd to be back amongst Shih Tzu & their owners again. The breed has no been part of my life for the past 20 years - ever since the late Ken & Betty Rawlings decided ‘that I should have a Shih Tzu’ - at that time I was showing a Tibetan Terrier. Although I do not show the breed now, I still have 3 faithful companion Shih Tzu at home with me. It was a pleasure to be judging along side Pauline Brooks. I am pleased that we were unanimous in our decisions for all top awards. I was v pleasantly surprised by the tremendous improvement in mouths & dentition since I last judged. I feel we now need to think about pigmentation - there is a definite need for black & white & solids to be included in breeding programmed as I feel that some of the golds are getting v pale & the true dark eye is starting to fade due to this lack of input. Body is still lacking - there are far too many narrow bodies, lacking the sturdy broad chest. Movement is to my mind still a problem. Are we showing Lhasa Apso’s or Shih Tzu? So many had typical Lhasa movement which is not correct for the Shih Tzu, please do not allow this to become the accepted normality. The true free flowing movement, teamed with pure arrogance is a joy to behold, I felt today that we are losing this feature from the breed. Tail carriage seems to be improving, the low flat tails were certainly in the minority. This is a truly enchanting & special breed, long may they retain their charm & breed type, the future is in our hands, long may we love & cherish these little people.

MPD class view
1. Debeaux Ruff N' Reddie Most beautiful head & expression, this young man had
superb dentition, beautiful dark eyes & gd nose placement, this beautiful head
piece was carried on a well arched neck of sufficient length, heading to a neat
front assembly, well bodied & balanced in hind quarters, moved with great style
showing typical arrogance;
2. Krisquest Top Gun Another well balanced p with great personality, gd eye teamed with correct nose placement,
gd width to jaw, not quite the body of winner, also needs to
develop in forechest;
3. Lauramist Cool As Ice at Inishfendra
Excelled in breed type, loved the head, face & expression on this young man, gd overall balance &
great tail carriage, not wanting to show his attributes off to
his best advantage today.

1. Pekoe Sharp Shooter . My notes simply state ‘typical & gorgeous’ just loved
this young man, he just has all the attributes of a typical Shih Tzu, overall beautifully balanced, crowned with a
well proportioned headpiece, super dark eye, well placed, nose
sited above a terrific jaw & mouth placement, beautiful
arched neck, gd forehand with balancing hindquarters, well
bodied for age, moved with style & arrogance showing off his terrific tail set,
one I shall look out for in the future
2. Krisquest Willy Nilly Well balanced young male with gd head proportions, would have preferred a stronger neck
placement, another with great arch to neck, balance in
quarters both fore & aft, well bodied with gd tail set, v
stylish with a great personality

A gd class of promising young stock
1. Sonoltay Thumbs Up . I
just loved this d on first glance & he didn’t disappoint
upon going over him. Beautifully balanced young male of gd
size, well finished for his age, his head piece was just right
for me, beautifully proportioned, with the most expressive
eyes, gd nose placement & the jaw placement, well arched
neck leading to true forehand, broad chest, well coupled,
teamed with strong well angled hindquarters, gd tail set, this
d was just my ‘cup of tea’ he had so much arrogance &
style & moved with great stride, never stopped showing, it
was this extra personality that gave him the edge in the final
run, pleased to award him his first CC & RBIS. In the
challenge for BOB I felt the b was just more mature & finished in coat. I shall
watch his career with interest (I note that I did his father well the last time
I judged);
2. Hashanah Call Of The Search at Numoon Most gorgeous b/w, again just my
type of Shih Tzu, unlucky to meet winner I
am sure those both will do well, he scored highly in head
& expression, gd nose placement, again a terrific neck
& front assembly, well bodied with strong hindquarters
& gd tail carriage, another who moved with great style &
arrogance, just my type

1. Peekin Georgie Armani-Tu A v well balanced d of gd breed type (was fourth in a strong
junior class), he has a classic headpiece with warm expressive
eye giving a gd expression, scored well in neck, fore quarters
& body, he too has well proportioned hindquarters crowned
with a gd tail set, a great personality who was giving his
handler a hard time today, moved with style when settled
2. Jacquinta Arfa Chance Equally well balanced b/w, albeit of a smaller size,
charming headpiece with pleasing expression, not quite the body of winner, gd hindquarters with
gd tail set, adequate in movement
3. Anthrosyl Dark Enchantment
Res. Laurmerand Wild Card
ND
1. Daltricia Morpheus Attractive male with balanced headpiece showing gd eye &
mouth, scored well in forequarters, hindquarters & tail set. I found him to be a
shade short coupled but nevertheless he displayed the best movement in this
class
2. Daltricia Melampus at Tickletums Initial impression was gd, this male looked
great standing, great head & eye, preferred the forehand of winner, scored in
body & hindquarters, would have liked a better tail set, was outshone in
movement by the winner

presented solid gold who scored well in body, he has an attractive headpiece
with gd expression, strong well
proportioned quarters both fore & aft, adequate in
movement, presented in gd coat
2. Keytor Abracadabra B/w male who has a beautiful headpiece, expressive eye,
well placed nose & gd mouth, scored well in quarters but did not have the body

1. Maitreya's Minstrel A stunning b/w of gd overall balance & type, just loved his headpiece, he
had a great expression set off with a well placed nose
leather. Strong arched neck leading to gd front assembly &
shoulder placement, scored well in body with breadth to chest,
strong hindquarters supporting a gd tail set, moved with true
movement & style
2. Mirazian Artist Impression Another striking male with many breed attributes.
Super head piece, balanced in quarters, both fore & aft, gd
body, overall picture not as balanced as winner, would have
preferred more height to tail carriage, moved with great style
& arrogance. Two v nice Shih Tzu’s

1. Debshores Hogans Hero D of great balance when viewed in profile, scored well
in neck, he has a terrific strong arched neck supporting a balanced headpiece, not too keen on eye
placement, could be wider set, excellent forequarters with gd
width to chest, strong loin & hindquarters with a gd tail
carriage, displayed a terrific driving movement both fore & aft
2. Mirazian Symbol Of Freedom JW Another super d who was a close second to
winner. To me he has a wonderful headpiece displaying the correct expression.
Scored ok in quarters but could be stronger in loin, tail set ok did not have
the stride or movement of winner, overall a balanced & v typy Shih Tzu

well presented he moved with great style & aplomb showing plenty of drive fore &
aft

b/w d who has a terrific headpiece with a super eye & nose placement, scored

1.Ch Tameron Mr XS Quality g/w d who is true breed type, he has many breed
attributes, I just loved the headpiece on this boy, he has the most beautiful
expression, scores well in forehand & shoulder placement, he has gd body proportions with a balanced
hind assembly, all crowned with a glorious tail set, moves
consistently & sound, put down to perfection, in the
challenge the JD was just displaying more arrogance in his
head carriage & a more jaunty stride displaying more pad
behind. A great credit to the breed RCC
2. Peekin Jimmy Choo-Tu Another superb male who excels in breed type, so well
balanced in profile, he too has a terrific head piece with a gorgeous
expression, super well arched neck leading to gd front assembly, scored well in
body & hindquarters, moved with great purpose & drive, another who was put down
to perfection, a close thing between 1 & 2, just felt the winner had the edge on
maturity & coat texture

video dog challenge (5mb)
Many thanks for inviting me to this Ch show and many thanks to
my two excellent stewards. Since last judging the breed I found improvement in
dentition far less jumble of teeth, lay back of shoulders needs improving and
some d lack legs moved to close together. My winners were v pleasing.
