I would like to thank the Committee of the Shih Tzu Club for inviting me to judge for them at their Championship show and for their hospitality throughout the day.
Thank you to everyone who allowed me the honour of judging their dogs and for their appreciation of my placings, this always makes for a lovely friendly atmosphere.
As always I was looking for a dog who was not only sound but true to the breed standard, free from exaggeration and with plenty of breed type and character. I certainly found this in my main winners and most of my class winners.
Whilst I would love to report that everything in the breed ring today is wonderful, this would be a misleading critique if I did and I’m sure one that most would not, for one minute believe. Sadly, since I last judged 18 months ago my concerns are much the same. I found many to be upright in shoulder thus displaying an uncharacteristic, high stepping and often stilted front action and poor necklines. Many stand, leaning forward.
Short ribcages, shallow chests and Apso-like bodies are still sadly in evidence.
I noticed that some of the exhibits had undesirable, light eyes. Some had very small eyes also.
As always, presentation on the most part was very good, most shown in lovely coat but sadly some lacked muscle tone and firm bodies.
I was concerned to see several exhibits “Fish-tailing”.
Mouths on the most part were improved with only one wry and one over-shot bite. I did however find several with dirty teeth. I really don’t enjoy being so critical but I fear that we are in danger of losing many of the essential characteristics that contribute to this wonderful breed. Sadly, I don’t quite know what the answer is other than for us all to study and adhere to the standard and be very selective in our breeding programmes.
